Capturing the sight of her Whippet basking in the morning sun has led Welsh amateur photographer Tina Williams to victory in the Kennel Club’s Dog Photographer of the Year Competition 2011. Judges including Dame Jenni Murray and photographer Martin Usborne spent hours deliberating over the thousands of images that were entered into the competition, the most successful to date.

Raising almost £2,500 for the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, the competition attracted entrants from all over the world and standards were high. Despite tough competition, the winning image of Whippet, Joey, with its unique and elegant charm was decided as the winner of both the Portrait category and the overall competition.

The photographer, Tina from Holyhead, Wales said: “It is a brilliant feeling to be awarded Dog Photographer of the Year. I am looking forward to seeing the other images as I know competition was tough. All dogs are beautiful to me, which is why I love taking pictures of my dogs. Joey is obviously a brilliant model!”

The Dog Photographer of the Year Competition consists of five categories: Portrait, Man’s Best Friend, Dogs At Play, Dogs At Work and I Love Dogs Because – a category specifically for those aged 16 and under.

We feel that the photo of the Joey the Whippet is without doubt an extremely beautiful image. The light in the photo is soft, bringing out the light and shadow in the dogs fur. The warmth, not only in the colours of the image, but also in the eyes of the Whippet, is totally stunning.

Here at Pets in Portraits, we would be extremely proud to have taken a photo as beautiful as the winning entry. We also love to receive your photos of your pets so that we can transform them into beautiful pet portraits from photos, mounted on canvas, or a framed mount and delivered to your door.
